Tireless in outreach work: Dr Waimbe Wahamu

Even in these difficult Corona times, the ophthalmologist Dr. Waimbe Wahamu is tirelessly on the road, visiting and operating on patients in remote regions of Papua New Guinea.

In its August 8th issue, "The National" newspaper reports on the first week-long surgical mission at the hospital of Kainantu, Eastern Highland Province, where Dr. Wahamu has performed 70 cataract surgeries in addition to other treatments.

According to Dr. Enename Susuke, acting chief medical administrator, this was a unique opportunity for the local population to have their eye problems treated -some of which had lasted for many years- without having to travel to the far-away, larger cities. He sees it as a successful vision rehabilitation programme for many unfortunate people who thought there was no hope.

In addition, the local hospital team was also able to take advantage of the rare chance to assist in the surgeries and learn as they went.
